The Kedarkantha Trek is a popular winter trek in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It takes trekkers to the Kedarkantha peak, which offers stunning views of the Himalayan mountains.
The best time for the Kedarkantha Trek is during the winter months, from December to April, when the region is covered in snow, creating a picturesque landscape. However, it can also be done in the spring and autumn months for a different experience
The Kedarkantha Trek is considered a moderate trek, suitable for beginners and experienced trekkers alike. The difficulty increases during winter due to the snow and cold weather.
The trek is typically a 4-6 day journey, covering a distance of approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) round trip, depending on the starting point and the trekking route chosen.
While it's not mandatory to hire a guide, it is highly recommended, especially for those who are not familiar with the terrain. A guide can provide valuable insights, ensure safety, and navigate the trail effectively.
The highest point on the Kedarkantha Trek is the Kedarkantha summit, which stands at an altitude of approximately 12,500 feet (3,800 meters) above sea level.
Trekkers usually need permits from the Forest Department for the Kedarkantha Trek. These permits can be obtained through tour operators or at the forest checkposts.
Essential items to pack include warm clothing, trekking boots, sleeping bags, a good quality backpack, and basic medical supplies. A detailed packing list is often provided by trek organizers.
Accommodations along the trek route are generally in the form of tents or simple guesthouses in local villages. Trekkers are advised to carry their own sleeping bags.
Trekking during winter can be challenging due to snow and cold temperatures. Safety precautions, appropriate clothing, and the presence of an experienced guide are crucial for a safe trek.
The trek typically begins from a place called Sankri, which is accessible by road from Dehradun. Dehradun can be reached by air, rail, or road from major Indian cities.
